After leaving school, Peter Dutton worked as a police officer for the Queensland Police for nearly a decade before starting a business in construction with his father. He joined the Liberal Party as a teenager and was elected to the House of Representatives in 2001, at the age of 30.

Following the 2004 election, he was appointed Minister of Employment Participation. In January 2006, he was promoted to Assistant Treasurer under Peter Costello. Following the Liberal-National Coalition’s defeat in the 2007 election, he was named to the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Minister for Health, a position he held for six years.

After the Coalition’s victory in the 2013 election, Dutton was appointed Minister of Health and Sport. In December 2014, he was appointed Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, where he was in charge of supervising Operation Sovereign Borders.

He remained in that post after Malcolm Turnbull succeeded Tony Abbott as Prime Minister in September 2015. In December 2017, he was also appointed as Minister for Home Affairs, leading a new ‘super’ department with wide responsibilities combined with various current departments.

After Abbott’s defeat, Dutton rose to fame as the leader of the Liberal Party’s conservative section, and he came up as the future leader. In August 2018, following a period of weak opinion polling for the Coalition, Dutton unsuccessfully challenged Turnbull for leadership. Following Turnbull’s resignation, he was beaten by Scott Morrison in a second leadership ballot.

Morrison retained him as Minister for Home Affairs before appointing him Minister for Defence and Leader of the House in March 2021. Following the Coalition’s defeat in the 2022 election, he succeeded Morrison as party leader unopposed, becoming opposition leader.
