In 1999, he began working for the Associated Press in London while touring Europe and Asia. Ovadia joined Seven News in 2000, just after the 2000 Olympics.Ovadia covered a wide range of stories for Seven, including the 2002 Sydney bushfire disaster and the Iraq War, before being elevated to Crime Reporter in September 2003.

In 2008, he and colleague Aela Callan received the coveted Walkley Award for Television News Reporting for uncovering the Iguanagate scandal that enveloped the NSW and federal governments. In 2009, he served as the MC at the funeral of the Lin family, who were murdered outside their North Epping home. He was picked over Nine reporter Jessica Rich.

On December 13, 2013, Ovadia appeared on Today Tonight when the usual fill-in presenter Kylie Gillies was on vacation. On Christmas Day 2013, 2014, and 2015, Ovadia hosted the Seven News weeknight bulletin in Sydney. Ovadia criticized Apple Daily for using information by selectively editing footage of Ma’s assault to portray Ma as wanting to cause violence.

Senior Channel Seven journalist Robert Ovadia says he has been sacked by the network after an internal investigation was launched into allegations of inappropriate behavior.In a statement, the Sydney-based crime reporter confirmed to ABC he has been fired after 23 years with the network.”I’ve been sacked and there will be more to say about that in the appropriate time,” he said.
